Evolutionary note preservation¶
Evolutionary note preservation is a core principle within the Zettelkasten methodology that prioritizes the retention of intellectual history over the maintenance of a perfect, static record^[300-閱讀筆記__Zettelkasten.md].
This practice dictates that outdated or imperfect notes should never be deleted^[300-閱讀筆記__Zettelkasten.md]. Instead, the author creates a new note containing the updated thinking and explicitly links it back to the previous iteration^[300-閱讀筆記__Zettelkasten.md]. This connection must explain why the older note was inadequate or has been superseded^[300-閱讀筆記__Zettelkasten.md]. By preserving the "defunct" note along with the critique, the author maintains a traceable record of how their understanding has evolved over time^[300-閱讀筆記__Zettelkasten.md].
Key Principles¶
The application of evolutionary note preservation relies on the following workflow:
- Non-deletion: Old notes are never removed from the system^[300-閱讀筆記__Zettelkasten.md].
- Explicit Linkage: New notes must link to the notes they supersede^[300-閱讀筆記__Zettelkasten.md].
- Documentation of Error: The link must clarify the specific reasons why the previous note was insufficient^[300-閱讀筆記__Zettelkasten.md].
